Big win for Kreuziger in Amstel
By @sneaitsab
Roman Kreuziger has won the Amstel Gold Race 2013. The rider of Saxo-Tinkoff won the race after a solo victory, before Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEdge). Favorite Philippe Gilbert finished fifth.
Seven leaders with Johan Vansummeren and Mikel Astarloza took a lead of 11 minutes in the first kilometers of the race. But Blanco tried to bridge the gap. At 100 km of the finish, Philippe Gibert crashed. But the world champion was 10 km later back in the peloton.
In the breakaway, Mikel Astarloza took a lead on the others. He rode a long time lonely at the front of the race. Pieter Weening was the first of the favourites who attacked. On the Eyserbosweg, he bridged the gap to Asterloza with Nordhaug, Kreuziger, Grivko, Lagutin and Tanner.
Roman Kreuziger attacked in the front group, and took a lead of 40 seconds on the peloton. At the final climb, the Cauberg, Philippe Gilbert tried to bridge the gap to Kreuziger, but he couldn’t: Kreuziger won the race solo. Alejandro Valverde won the sprint of the second group.
