Giro d´Italia 2021 – Stage 21 Preview

By David Hunter

Senago > Milano 30.2km

We end with a TT.

30km after 3 weeks of a demanding grand tour is an almost cruel way to end. The gaps will be enormous and, only a handful of riders can win this stage. Most of the route is a gentle downhill, it’s made for the big powerhouses. This is a TT specialists dream!

Weather

Sunny and the wind won’t be a factor. It looks like the same conditions for all.

DS Cycling Mole

One last chance to get me some champagne. The TGV, it’s all on you, full gas.

Remember, the last one of you boys home is first at the bar, and I’m very thirsty.

Contenders

Pippo Ganna – after being stuck on the front for hour after hour, how much energy does he have left? If this was a standalone race he’d be the overwhelming favourite, but we often see upsets at the end of a grand tour. It’s all about how much energy riders have used up over the three weeks, and how much they have left. We’ll have to wait to see if Ganna has been holding something back.

Rémi Cavagna – so close to winning on Thursday, but this is another opportunity for him. Unlike Ganna he’s been able to safe energy during the race, we’ve not seen much of him near the front of the bunch. This is a big chance for Cavagna to land a big one.

Edoardo Affini – so close to starting the race with a win, but Ganna was too good. In my head I have him as a TT rider who prefers a race under 20km, we’ll have to see if this one is too long for him.

Prediction Time

A win for Pippo Ganna, I think he’ll have enough left in the tank. The top 3 on GC to remain the same with Egan Bernal taking home a well-deserved pink jersey.

It’s been one hell of a grand tour. We’ve broken all previous records with 20,000 readers every single day, thanks for coming along for the ride.
