Tour de La Provence – Prologue Preview

The Route
Opening day in Provence and it doesn’t bring in any difficulty, a 7 kilometer prologue in Berre-l’Étang will kick things off to deliver a first leader and also to make for some seconds of difference between the riders.
It’s fully flat, it’s an out-and-back ride from the town with no technical challenges, the riders will have to go through some roundabouts but that’s about the only thing they’ll have to concern, it’s all about speed.
The Weather
A slight breeze from the southwest, the route will be exposed and have a little bit of headwind on the way back to town, so pacing will be crucial to get this one right.
The Favourites
Filippo Ganna – The world time-trial world champion in a course very close to perfect for him. Honestly, I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t win.
Ethan Hayter – The main competitor comes from the same team, Ethan Hayter is one of the most complete riders in the peloton and will also be a fierce contender, and clear candidate to take the leader’s jersey in the next few days.
Quick-Step – With Julian Alaphilippe and Ilan van Wilder they have a couple of strong contenders, who may be eyeing more gaining some valuable seconds on the GC if it’s possible.
Patrick Bevin – With Israel I doubt he has the bike to do this, but on his best day the Kiwi is a top time-trialist, who is used to starting off the season very well.
Furthermore you can see some other riders succeed. This isn’t exactly suited to the time-trialists that much, rouleurs can definitely get in the fight for the win. Groupama’s Bruno Armirail and Tobias Ludvigsson will be interesting to watch, B&B Hotels’ Alexis Gougeard goes down the same path.

With Ganna on the startline it’ll take a crash or a mechanical to remove him off this win.
