Tour de San Luis 2015 – Stage 7 Preview
By David Hunter
The tour ends with 122.4km from San Luis and back to San Luis. It’s a nice, easy day in the saddle and we should get one last sprint.
Certainly not a flat day but there’s no real need for the bunch to go fast over the hills. Funvic will control the early part of the race, before Etixx – QuickStep and Lampre take over. The tour was billed as a battle between two sprinters: Cavendish and Modolo, but we had an unwelcome guest at the party in Fernando Gaviria.
Twice he has beaten the big two sprinters and the boy from Colombia is being pursued by a number of World Tour teams. In the opening stage, he surprised them by launching his sprint relatively early. His second win was a good sprint but Etixx made a mess of the lead-out and Cavendish was furious. They rarely make the same mistake twice, let alone three times.
Gaviria is very quick but since his second win we’ve had two very demanding mountain stages. At just 20 years old, it’s a lot to ask and he must be starting to get tired.
Cavendish seems quite far ahead of Modolo, but they need to get the lead-out right.
The downhill finish is perfect for the sprinters and we should get a very fast finish. Apart from these three riders we could see some of the following challenging for the win: Hutarovich, Marini, Gatto, Tolosa and Mareczko.
Prediction Time
A standard day in the saddle and a sprint. Cavendish isn’t going to let the young Colombian beat him again. A day for Cav!
